Description

Specifications of Black Gaffer Tape 50mm x 50m:

The Black Gaffer Tape roll is 50mm x 50m wide and long, providing a long life (est. 164ft) when used in heavy-duty applications. The backing of the tape is reinforced cloth (polyester/cotton blend) coated with heavy polyethylene. A rubber adhesive with pressure sensing gives excellent holding quality but is designed to peel away. To blend in on the film sets and stage, the tape is matte black (non-reflective).

Gaffa tape

Key specifications include:

  • Width: 50 mm
  • Length: 50 m (approx. 164 ft)
  • Supporting Material: Strengthened cloth, polyethylene coated.
  • Glue: Natural rubber pressure-sensitive adhesive (high tack, low residue)
  • Colour/Finish: Matte black (non-reflective, low gloss)
  • Thickness: ~130 μm (microns)
  • Weight: ~0.36 kg per roll
  • Tearability: Can be torn off by hand (along the roll and across the roll) easily.
  • Water Resistance: Very water resistant (PE backing is moisture-repellent)
  • Temperature: Can operate between around -35°C up to +80°C (tape should be able to handle stage light heat to about 150°C in brief bursts)
  • Residue: Will leave almost no adhesive residue on surfaces.

Such specs make the black gaffer tape hardy and flexible. High tensile strength of the PE-coated cloth backing (approximately 130 μm thick) enables the tape to resist wear and heavy foot traffic. The rubber adhesive is designed to stick forcefully to wood, metal, plastic, fabric, and painted surfaces and to leave no strip or damage on the surface when removed.

FAQs

Does black gaffer tape leave residue?
In most cases, no—good-quality gaffer tape should come off without leaving much or any sticky residue when removed within a reasonable time. But heat or very fragile surfaces or long-term exposure can produce some residue. Hint: painted or varnished surfaces should be tested first on a small concealed area.
Is black gaffer tape waterproof and suitable for outdoor use?
Not all gaffer tapes are completely waterproof, but a lot of black gaffer tapes are both water-resistant and can be used occasionally in damp or outdoor conditions. To be sure of excellent performance outdoors, select an outdoor-rated version or a cloth version coated with vinyl that is referred to as weatherproof. Special waterproof tapes or cable conduits should be used where permanent fixings need to be done outdoors.
Can I tear 50mm gaffer tape by hand?
Yes - one of the characteristics of cloth gaffer tape is easy hand-tearability (across and often along the tape). This allows it to work speedily on set or on site without scissors. Formulations with greater proportions of cloth fibers of higher density tear more easily than those with heavy vinyl coating.
Will black gaffer tape damage paint, wallpaper or delicate surfaces?
No, generally, provided it is used on a temporary basis, gaffer tape is designed to stick firmly but to be easily removed. However, the longer the adhesion or the more the sunlight/heat, the greater the risk of pull or finish damage with very fragile paints/wallpapers. Never peel away the finish from a high-value item, and check if it can be tested on a back patch.
How heat-resistant is black gaffer tape (can it be used near stage lights)?
Gaffer tape is more heat resistant than most vinyl tapes and is often applied in areas of light, but it is not fireproof. Normal fabric/PE gaffer tapes can withstand hot spots generated by studio lights for reasonable durations, but not in the presence of very high temperatures or on or near open flames. In heat applications, use high-temperature tape.
What’s the difference between black gaffer tape and ordinary duct tape?
They appear to be alike but act differently. Gaffer tape is a cloth-backed, rubber-based adhesive with a clean removable characteristic, matte (non-reflective) finish, and tearable by hand - designed to work with film, stage, and AV applications. Duct tape typically provides a PVC/vinyl back with a stronger permanent adhesive and a shinier finish, making it superior in long-term heavy repair but inferior in temporary stage/paint-safe work. Select gaffer tape where appearance and easy removal are important.
